The Outrageous Cost of Traditional Holiday Lighting

If you’ve ever seen the movie “Christmas Vacation,” you’ve probably recognized traces of Clark Griswold in the people you know. My father was similarly obsessed with putting on the most gaudy, elaborate display of lights on the block. Tact and subtlety were not terms that held much weight in his mind, and the other heads of household in the neighborhood only stoked his competitive spirit.

There are two events that my siblings and I could always count on when Christmas time rolled around. First, our dad would take every opportunity to gloat about the lighting effects at our annual holiday party. Then, when the December electrical bill arrived sometime in January, he would stomp around the house in sheer disbelief that all that wastefulness could come at a cost. I think of those times now in my adult life when I string up a solar Christmas light or two around the residence.

Decorating for Christmas, Solar Style

For many families, decorating for Christmas is one of the best bonding experiences to come around all year. Dressing the evergreen tree with elaborate ornaments – both store bought and homemade – is an activity that brings back happy memories from another place and time. In some neighborhoods, the competitive spirit of the season manifests itself through exterior decorations.

Electrical bills rise exponentially as rival households try to outdo each other by offering onlookers the most spectacular display of lights. Thanks to the advent of solar powered Christmas light, it’s no longer necessary to use dangerous extension cords or to place lights in close proximity to electrical outlets. Solar power cuts electrical costs and provides decorators with even more creative freedom than they thought possible.

Saving Money for the Holidays

While the December holidays are still more than a few months away, a lot of people are starting to save money now. While the economy is on the upturn, employment is still rising, and a lot of people are doing their best to cut costs and save for the future. In addition to the costs of gifts, travel, and food around the holidays, there’s the added cost of electricity from running Christmas lights. This year, instead of using electric power to create that beautiful light display, check out solar Christmas lights. These lights absorb power from the sun throughout the day, and then light up at night to provide a beautiful display of twinkling just as bright and radiant as if it were powered by electricity.

It’s a fact that around the holidays a lot of people’s electric bill starts to ramp up, so this year, cut costs with an investment in solar Christmas lights. Save money, and save the environment at the same time; it’s a win win situation!

Solar Powered Christmas Lights

With the entire world going green, the holidays are no time to skip out on doing our part to help the environment.  This year, solar powered Christmas lights have become quite a hot commodity on the market.  These innovative outdoor lights store solar energy during the day, and use it to power a beautiful holiday display during the evening hours.  Great for decorating landscapes or houses; use them just like electric Christmas lights!  You might also consider purchasing an artificial tree.  Though low quality trees will fall apart, a high quality silk tree will keep its shape year after year, saving you time and money in the long run.

Also be sure to compost all those holiday leftovers, recycle all the bottles and cans from holiday gatherings, and instead of returning unwanted gifts; donate them!
